Prayer of the day

Holy God, as we approach you and see the sunrise, we ask many questions of you in our state of isolation and anguish. We are left pondering your responses to the questions we ask. You say to us: ‘Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations.. who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what was its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone – while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy. Who shut up the seas behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garments and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place…… Have you ever given orders to the morning or shown the dawn its place, that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it…….?’ (Job 40 ff).

Lord like Job, we know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. We are quick to speak of things that we do not understand, things too wonderful for us to know. Our ears had heard of you, but now our eyes have seen and our hands touched.

1 John 1 in his letter reinforces Job when he says this:

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— 2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

Gracious and ever living God we come to you broken and crying for healing and restoration. Be with us this day as we dwell in your presence.
